Nothing more interesting?

I am quite surprised with the latest news about Britney Spears shaving her head. Not because of what she did but because everybody seems to talk about it everywhere! It’s even on the news!! :o What is the big deal??? She had a hair cut, only it is a radical one! It’s not like she cut off an arm or killed herself! It will grow back!!!!

Ok, so it may be a sign of depression! A lot of people have depressions, a lot worse than hers. And she has the money to treat herself and people around her which is a lot more that most depressed people.

I saw something here that kind of explains why a shaved head shocks people so much. But I still think that getting completely wasted, doing drugs, and driving with your kids on your lap a lot worse than a hair cut!!!  And we all know the vast majority of stars do that anyway everyday!

So I still don’t understand what is the big deal about Britney Spears shaving her hair and having news time spent on it. :s

Is it just me??

I think it was a bit shocking. Anyone who cuts her own hair, is a nutcase and should be locked up.

The fact she has now gone into rehab is not a shock. Doing this clearly shows the woman is mentally unstable.

I must admit when I first saw her with a shaved head I was quite shocked. I imagine that’s a normal human instinct, especially when it is a woman who is on the recieving end of the shears. Perhaps because long flowing locks is one mark of femininity.

I agree that it is not a big deal and that she could be doing worse stuff (drugs etc.) She has been acting peculiar so I’m not too surprised. But in general, why would a woman shaving her head mean she is a “nutcase”?
Time to break down some preconceptions of what it means to be feminine….?

I don’t know you Pip, but according to Cat’s pontuation table, 10000 points to you!

After reading this entry I wasn’t going to comment anything: I even thought it was a “rethoric” post by Cat. (Sorry for my english , is a bit rusty).

I changed my mind after reading Russ’s comment: “Doing this clearly shows the woman is mentally unstable”.

More chocking than Brit shave her had is (in my opinion) the capacity of quick judjment about HER decision on HER hair.

I think my comment was a bit tongue in cheek. Perhaps I was a bit blunt, but my point is sound.

I think anyone should be able to do what they want with their hair, bodies etc. I myself have been a shaven headed man myself on two occasions (one I’d rather not talk about!)

However the point is not about a persons right to do what they want. The point is that in the context of what happened, it heavily suggested that there is something unstable about Britney’s mental state.

Many of the news articles were filled with lines asking “has Britney lost it”, “is she mentally unstable” etc. It is not uncommon for people to come to this conclusion. En masse, that was the message in the public eye.

This has been born out in that Britney IS mentally unstable, and HAS gone to seek therapy.

At some point, you lost the important thing, which has nothing to do with a persons rights. It was an out of character thing to do. Any more than it would be for me to go out, and start a fight with someone in the street. If I did this, people would raise this as unusual behaviour, and wonder if something was wrong.

I think it was the unusual behaviour that caused peoples opinions. Ask yourself, if you were going to cut your own hair, would you do it in a public place, go to a hair salon, and let the press take photos while you do it? Or would a more reasonable suggestion be to do this in your own home, or get someone else to do it for you?

Britney suffers from the young star syndrome, whereby people who are thrust into fame and fortune at a young age, suffer consequences later, due to their inability to process things with such a young, developing mind. Mackauly Culkin is another example of this effect.

While my comment was direct, it is not invalid for the reasons I have explained above :)

To further comment to Pip, this has nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman, or any misconceptions I have of how a woman should look or behave :)

Apologies, Russ. I did mean to insinuate that :) I was merely commenting on the general reaction people have when a woman shaves her hair off and why this may occur. My comment was mostly precipitated from the link that Cat supplied.

Though, reading your comment, I agree that if a woman, or anybody for that matter, does something out of context and out of the ordinary then there may be something wrong, especially if done in front of the public eye.

I’m with Cat on this. The Britney thing is a real “so what” moment. Someone who has been behaving very strangely recently has done something that would generally be regarded as strange? Surely not. I’d never have guessed. How the sod does that qualify as news??

It’s like the Kate Moss thing a year or so back. The woman was a model going out with a rock singer. I would have been more shocked to have lerant that she didn’t do cocaine than that she did!

But my main issue with this is why it it news and why do people care?! There are far far more significant events taking place both nationally and around the world that I would far rather hear about and read about than what some ex-pop star has done with her hair. Where’s the sense of perspective? Am I the only person in the world who clings to some futile hope that they might actually be educated by the news?!!

It’s also highly exploitative to report whatever is going on in Britney’s life if she is depressed. It’s hardly going to assist her! But then expecting consideration from the media really would be too much wishful thinking!!

    Right, rant over now…

I was going to say “welcome to the English media Cat” but then you’ll probably tell me that the media are just as inane in Portugal and elsewhere…

    Hi Dan
I’m sure that the event was commented in Portugal, but I’m afraid that, in terms of gossip, celebrity or not, England breaks all records. Fortunately Portugal is not even close to that. Privacy is still respected. To a certain extent, of course.
It was one of the things that shocked me more about England: The lack of respect for other people’s privacy. As you well know :p You heard me complain several times.
