When someone comes to your house to fix something (electricians, gas people, painters, etc) it is polite, if not mandatory, to offer them:
In England-A drink, i. e., tea or coffee and/or some biscuits.
In Portugal-You fill your fridge with beer or take them to the nearest cafe on their break and buy them some.
(After 3 weeks of chasing the estate agency and desperation we finnaly have our boiler fixed!)

Oh Dear! Here, the first thing you say if someone goes into your house is: ‘would you like a cuppa?’
aqui nunca se oferece nada. Com o que eles ocbram pelo serviço já lhes dá para comprarem as suas jolas. É que também não se pode beber em serviço… e chá ou café nunca se quer, né?
A mais gira que tive foi um rapaz que veio inspeccionar o gás e tinha um medidor de CO e como ele fumava fechámo-nos na cozinha a fumar com tudo fechado e medimos a concentração. Nem chegava para matar uma mosca… Mas o cada um fumou o seu tabaco, nada de oferendas
