Carnaval and Pancake day

Well then, been so busy I completely forgot this holiday in Portugal, Carnaval! It’s becoming worrying that I knew it was pancake day and forgot it was Carnaval ![]()
Well the two are very closely related: they both refer to the Tuesday before ash Wednesday which is the first day of lent, or 40 days of fasting and prayer before Easter.
These 40 days represent the time Jesus spent on the desert without eating and endured the temptation of the devil. So during these 40 days people are not supposed to eat certain (rich) foods like meat and eggs and so on. Well Carnaval and pancake Tuesday are a direct response to that:
Carnaval is the last day that people have to party and eat and have a good time before entering the lent period. So they go crazy on the Tuesday and then enter the fasting period.
Pancake day is the way of getting rid of all the perishable foods that can’t be eaten during the next 40 days like eggs and milk. It’s quite a delicious way of doing it as well ![]()
Considering that I hate Carnaval anyway because people behave like idiots, I quite like the pancake day thing. Too bad it’s not a holiday like in Portugal. And Russ makes fantastic pancakes ![]()

Pages of my thesis written.
*It figures, it’s at the time I’m supposed to leave work that I get the inspiration to write…
Cancel the gym and work a bit late and even so, only 4 pages… Sigh…

Again, an excellent film. It seems like there is a flow of good things coming from Hollywood at the moment. One good film after the other.
Ok so it’s a Godzilla like film, nothing new about that, a bit too many unlikely things happening, but the way it is made is innovative and very good.
I did enjoy it very much. Left the cinema with a feeling that, if I had payed for the ticket, it would’ve been money very well spent.
Just a warning though: if you get motion sickness be careful as you may have leave the room straight to the toilet. The camera is VERY unstable. I get motion sickness but I was so caught up in the film that I got over it. But other people had to stop looking at the screen many times as they were getting terribly sick

Between worrying sick about the PhD (together with depressing days in the lab and cursing Excel) and playing Zelda* on the Wii for entire days (weekends), there is not much left to talk about except cinema…
*I seriously have a problem with this. It seems to be the longest game in history and I promised my self I would have to finish it before starting Mario Galaxy. And to make it worse I have to have every single heartpiece, bug and poe in the game. Mario…Maybe next year…

Almost forgot to comment on this one ![]()
I don’t really know what to say about it. I did like it. It’s a good film. Makes you think; you leave the cinema and keep thinking of it for some time. But it’s not a ‘no country for old men’. Not an amazing film.
Tomy Lee Jones however, what a fantastic performance! Excellent!
In summary it’s a good film but not a masterpiece. Recommended.
