Now here is something that I just only found out and left me very confused.
I’ve written before about abortion laws and how liberal they are in England. Abortion is permitted up until 26 weeks pregnancy and in practical terms all you have to do is go to your GP and tell him you want an abortion.
Oddly related to this is the fact that in the vast majority of hospitals, they are not allowed to tell the parents the sex of the baby! I know that there are some people who like to be surprised and therefore, don’t want to know the sex of the baby. But being forbidden? I found that very odd. Then I found out why. Apparently some people abort if the baby is a girl. So to prevent this from happening the sex of the baby can’t be known until birth. Which leaves me with a question: one of the reasons why people defend abortion is that it is best to keep the baby from being born than to give him/her a life time of misery with parents who didn’t want them. I wonder how the lives of the baby girls will be with parents who didn’t want them. On the other hand, there should be no discrimination between boys and girls!
I’m still confused as to if this is a very conservative of a very liberal law

Check what I wrote here about bank holidays in England and Portugal

After a weekend of meeting a big part of Russ’s huge family (which was very nice and friendly
), nothing better than a bank holiday morning, sitting in the sofa with a blanket reading and watching the rain outside
Nice!

Considering that it took me 6 months to write a chapter of my thesis and have it corrected, if I have 8 chapters to do still, it will take me 4 years to finish writting up!

it’s been gorgeous for almost 2 weeks now. Beautiful sunshine and temperatures of up to 27 C
I must say that 27 C here is like 37 in Portugal. The heat is very different and a lot more difficult to deal with.
It will be over soon though. Next week we are back in winter
So we’ve been enjoying the sunshine with bike rides on weekends. Last weekend Russ’s family joined us and we had a great time. There are beautiful places in Milton Keynes and you can go anywhere by bike without putting a foot on the road

Despite my mum freaking out with Milton Keynes, it was actually a very good time. Especially for me
I loved having them here, and I felt really bad when they left. It was good to have someone to speak Portuguese to and mum’s cuddles are always mum’s cuddles.
R. escaped to London one of the days and she had her adventures there which is typical. Some things never change
Russ’s parents and brother came to visit and met my mum. Despite the fact they don’t speak the same language, gestures and smiles were enough to communicate and I think it went really well. We all went to see a house and then for a pub lunch, where we were served by a Portuguese from Lisbon (always the coincidences). Then we went to town and walked around the shopping centre.
Sunday was good too, we had Dan Becky and Neil over for a Sunday roast cooked by Russ and we all had a good laugh.
Later my mum and R. tried a bit of bowling, golf and tennis on the Wii and I must say they really got the hang of it.
All in all it was great to have them here. Not sure if it was the same for them but at least I had my coffee machine which saved my mum from starting to kill people

My mum and my friend R. came to visit for 4 days a couple of weeks ago.
Mum: Where are the people? There are no people on the streets! Is it always like this?
Me: Yes mum, it’s always like this. You only see people in the city centre.
Mum: And where are the cafes? And the shops?
Me: There aren’t any. Only in the city centre.
Mum: Well lets go to the city centre and have coffee and see people!
Me: There is no point mum. Everything closed at 5.
Mum: What???? How can you live here??? What do you do????
